The History of the Cream City Cycle Club
This history was compiled from information found in club newsletters and meeting minutes as well as a few other club documents that were produced over the years. Special thanks to club Historian Mark Steckhahn for providing much of the information.
In the spring of 1980, a flyer is posted on bulletin boards around UW-Milwaukee:

…. BUT DO YOU HAVE A CLUB?

CREAM CITY CYCLE CLUB
This was the beginning of the Cream City Cycle Club.
The Cream City Cycle Club was founded in the spring of 1980 by five individuals who were looking for a club that had organization, structure, and education. They couldn’t find one, so they started their own. John Scherr was the first club president and Avie Judes was vice president. With education being a primary goal, they wanted the club to provide rides for the novice, intermediate, and advanced rider. An individual membership cost $5.00, a family membership (3 or more in a family) cost $2.50 per family member, and a sustaining membership $10 or above. As part of the membership fee, each member received a club patch. A calendar of upcoming rides and club activities was mailed to members each month. This information was incorporated into a monthly newsletter which was first published in September by the first newsletter editor Morrie Galitzer. Monthly meetings were held on the last Tuesday of the month at UWM mostly in Sabin Hall. The club’s fiscal and membership year ran from the May 1 to May 1. By late August, the club had 44 members.
Rides were held on most weekend days.
Novice rides held some Sunday afternoons starting at 1:30 from President John Scherr’s home – mileage and destination determined at the time of departure.
Tuesday evening rides (except on meeting night) through September.
T-shirts with the club logo available for $5.50
1981
Cross country skiing events were held over the winter.
After a January meeting at Marc’s Big Boy in Shorewood, most of the meetings were held at Lake Park Pavilion, with the September and October meetings being held at UWM in Sabin Hall.
The cost of a membership doubled. An individual membership changed to $10.00, a family membership (3 or more related persons) changed to $5.00 for each person, and a sustaining membership changed to $15 or above.
At the May meeting elections were held and Avie Judes was voted in as President.
In August, the monthly newsletter was named ‘Roll-a-round Milwaukee’
In August:
The fiscal year was established as May 1 to May 1. All members needed to renew their membership by May 1 no matter when they joined. If membership was not renewed by July 1, the member was dropped. Paperwork was in progress to incorporate the club.
Club rides were advertised in newspapers
Club liability insurance expired on 10/16. It will be reinstated in April for the next ride season
Tuesday night rides (except on meeting night) from Lake Park Pavilion.
July newsletter – first mention of “the wall” aka the Mill Road hill (11 of 14 riders made it up)
September – Telescope 100 ride: a combined American Youth Hostel (AYH) – CCCC 100 mile ride to Lake Geneva – CCCC’s first century ride
Club t-shirts could be ordered for $5.50 each (the club needed a minimum order of 5)
The first overnight ride (to Neosho) was held August 22 – 23.
Meetings held the last Tuesday of the month January through November
Weekend rides held most weekend days from April through mid-October
As of November, the club had 33 members.
On December 16, 1981, the club’s Articles of Incorporation were filed signed by the initial Board of Directors: Avie Judes, Kathleen Engl and John Scherr. The purpose of the club as stated in the articles is to 1) promote the sport of bicycling and bicycle touring and 2) promote bicycle safety. The club’s bylaws were established on December 28th.
In the bylaws:
Club colors – baby blue and white
Fiscal year – January 1 through December 31
3 types of membership – individual, family, business
Each membership entitled to one vote in club matters
